Wishing You the Best

I subscribe to Mike Dooley’s “Notes from the Universe.” Each weekday, an email appears in my inbox. Often, the message is right on target, applicable to my life, my philosophy, my aspirations. One recent morning, the note I found read as follows:

“In all things, Annis, always and forever,  simply wish the best for all involved, without stating what you think that is. And, then whatever does happen, no matter what happens, know that it was.”

The note made me think about the times when tough things happened and it turned out that those very trials led to something better -- possibly a better job, a better relationship, a better living situation. Or, if a change wasn’t an immediate improvement, it often opened a gateway for something else to happen that manifested as “the best.”

As parents, we desire the best for our kids. In our relationships, we want the best for our partners, spouses, and friends. As adult children, we would like what’s best for our parents. Sometimes we think we know what that is, and sometimes we don’t. Hey, sometimes we don’t even know what’s best for US, let alone for others. But the key is to trust that the best will come.

I think the hardest part is not stating what we think is “best” for the individual. We often believe we KNOW what is best and want to offer our advice. But the truth is that folks don’t need that from us. They need to make their own discoveries and decide what’s best for themselves, and they need to know we will love and support them when things go awry.

Wishing others the best without attachment to what that best might look like releases us from worry, concern, planning, or responsibility. Sometimes, we just have to wait, reserve judgment, and trust that in any given situation, “the best” will prevail.

May 2013 bring us all the best. Whatever that may be.
